Wooden mast for sailboat

Preparing wood mast painting - epoxy? varnish? primer?, I'm currently repairing and refinishing the mast on my 20' sloop. the mast is 33' boxed construction spruce, keel-stepped. the mast is around 30 years old, in good condition except for the bits i'm repairing. i've taken it down to bare wood and have been trying to figure out how to finish it. it's not pretty enough to justify the extra maintenance of varnish, and i don't have oodles of time to.
